Septins are cytoskeletal proteins involved in diverse biological processes including cytokinesis, cell morphogenesis, motility, and ciliogenesis. Septins form various filamentous structures in vitro and in vivo, but the higher-order architecture of septin structures in vivo remains poorly defined.
Septins are cytoskeleton components widely recognized for their role in eukaryotic cell division. Krokowski et al. discover that septins recognize dividing bacterial cells for entrapment and delivery to lysosomes. These results reveal a fundamental danger signal used by the host cell to recognize intracellular bacterial pathogens for cellular immunity.
The septins are guanine-nucleotide binding proteins that mostly form filaments. They are important in cytokinesis and also have roles in sporulation in yeasts and embryonic development and in the nervous system in animals.
